Year 9 Jewellery Design Technology

In the Jewellery Design and Technology course at Baldivis Secondary College, students will explore the art of jewellery making in a safe workshop setting. They will be introduced to essential tools, techniques, and processes involved in creating jewellery. The course will provide students with opportunities to research jewellery practices across various cultures and historical periods. Students will work both independently and collaboratively to design and create a range of jewellery pieces, including rings, earrings, pendants, and beads. The design process and principles will be emphasised throughout the course, guiding students in the development of their project work. Additionally, students will be encouraged to respond to different themes, observe the world around them, and explore a variety of media to enhance their jewellery making skills.

Course Objectives:

  1. Develop an understanding of safe practices, tools, techniques, and processes used in jewellery design.
  2. Explore and research jewellery practices from different cultures and historical periods.
  3. Foster independent and collaborative work habits in creating jewellery projects.
  4. Apply the design process and principles to the development of project work.
  5. Gain proficiency in manipulating materials, techniques, and processes to represent ideas and subject matter in jewellery.
  6. Analyse and evaluate artworks and displays from diverse cultures, times, and places.
  7. Develop problem-solving skills in the creation and fabrication of wearable jewellery and accessories.
  8. Utilise a wide range of specialist hand tools and equipment related to jewellery production and art metalwork.
  9. Experiment with a variety of materials, such as brass, copper, aluminium, wood, plastic, resin, and glass, in the creation of jewellery.

Assessment: Students will be assessed based on their ability to:

  1. Justify design decisions and articulate the design process of increasing complexity.
  2. Safely and skilfully select and use appropriate technologies to produce high-quality designed solutions.
  3. Evaluate and analyse artworks and displays from different cultural and historical contexts.
  4. Manipulate materials, techniques, and processes effectively to represent ideas and subject matter in their jewellery pieces.
