Year 9 Food Science and Technology

The Year 9 Food Science and Technology “Fun with Foods” course at Baldivis Secondary College provides an immersive and hands-on learning experience, aligning with the Year 9 Australian Curriculum. This year-long course consists of two lessons per week, with an emphasis on practical applications. Building on the skills acquired in Year 8, students will have the opportunity to choose and prepare foods that promote enjoyment and good health.

Throughout the course, students will delve into the intriguing world of homemade versus commercially prepared foods. They will critically analyse factors such as cost, nutritional value, time, taste, and appearance, exploring the advantages and disadvantages of each. Students will also develop skills in analysing personal food intake, interpreting food labelling, examining fast food advertising, and understanding the impact of social media on fast foods and nutrition.

The Year 9 Fun with Foods course is designed to be a hands-on and practical experience, empowering students to become independent and confident in the kitchen environment. It encourages cooperative work in small groups, fostering teamwork and collaboration. Students will develop their culinary skills and gain confidence in their ability to make informed decisions about food choices and preparation techniques.

In this course, students will critically analyse various factors, including social, ethical, and sustainability considerations, that influence designed solutions for global preferred futures. They will understand how products, services, and environments evolve, considering preferred futures and the impact of emerging technologies on design decisions. Students will investigate and make judgments on ethical and sustainable food production and marketing. They will explore the principles of food safety, preservation, preparation, presentation, and sensory perceptions, specifically focusing on creating food solutions for healthy eating. Additionally, students will investigate the characteristics and properties of materials, systems, components, tools, and equipment, and how they can be combined to create designed solutions. They will explore the integration of technologies across various specializations to develop comprehensive solutions.

By the end of Year 9, students will demonstrate a understanding of how factors impact design decisions and the technologies used in various occupations related to design and technologies. They will identify necessary changes in designed solutions to achieve desired future outcomes. Furthermore, students will evaluate the features of technologies within specific contexts, considering sustainability considerations and criteria for success.
