Year 9 German builds on the foundation established in Year 8, with a focus on engaging, real-life topics such as clothing and fashion, parties, friendship and communication, and holidays and travel. Throughout the year, students participate in creative projects that allow them to apply their language skills in fun and meaningful ways.
In Year 9, students may also be eligible to apply for the German Scholarship Program, sponsored by SAGSE, offering the opportunity to spend time in Germany, attend school with a host family, and experience German culture firsthand.
When choosing subjects in high school, you might consider the following:
- There are two pathways for German in upper school: the General and the ATAR pathway. Selecting a language as an ATAR subject adds 10% to your university entrance score (ATAR).
- Students also have the opportunity to apply for the German Scholarship Program, sponsored by SAGSE. Successful applicants can spend two months in Germany over the summer holidays, attend a German school with their host brother or sister, and experience a traditional German winter with Christmas markets and snow.
German Scholarship Program – Sponsored by SAGSE
The German Scholarship Program, in partnership with SAGSE (Society for Australian-German Student Exchange), offers a unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves in German language and culture through an authentic exchange experience.
Students can apply for the scholarship in Years 9 to 12, as long as they are at least 16 years old at the time of travel. Successful applicants travel to Germany during the Australian summer holidays for approximately two months, where they live with a host family and attend a local German school alongside their host sibling. The program offers a chance to experience daily life in Germany, build lasting friendships, and take part in unforgettable cultural traditions such as Christmas markets and winter activities.
The scholarship includes:
- Return airfare to Germany
- Train travel to the student’s final destination in Germany
- Participation in the Berlin Winter Camp
- The opportunity to host a German exchange student in Australia for approximately 12 weeks
This enriching program not only enhances students’ German language skills but also promotes personal growth, cultural understanding, and a global outlook.
