Year 10 Instrumental Music

All Year 10 School of Instrumental Music students are required to be enrolled in the Instrumental Class Music course at school.

The Year 10 Instrumental Class Music course is designed as a preparatory course for the tertiary entrance senior school contemporary music course. This program enables students to continue developing their skills in all aspects of contemporary music performance, composition and analysis. All students will continue to be enrolled in regular weekly instrumental lessons whereby free instruction is offered to students in the instrumental families of Guitar, Woodwind, Brass and Percussion. Instruction in these instruments involves thirty minutes a week in a small group situation and because of our cyclic timetable; students will only miss the same half-lesson of regular timetabling each week for a maximum of one term.

As part of this course, students will study in increasingly complex depths the theoretical concepts of contemporary music, whilst applying these new understandings to their own compositions and recordings. Students will also continue their aural (ear training) studies which will compliment their listening and performance skills in preparation for the tertiary entrance Music Course of Study: Contemporary.

Assessment for this course consists of:

  • The continuation of their music analysis journal which can be built on in further years of study;
  • A composition task; and
  • A solo or group performance on the students’ chosen instrument.

All students in the program are strongly encouraged to participate in an ensemble. The ensembles currently on offer are:

  • Contemporary Ensemble
  • Classical Guitar Ensemble
  • Baldivis Secondary College Concert Band
  • Rock Band

These students are required to attend weekly rehearsals mostly after school but also during some lunch times.

Students are required to wear a performance uniform to all music performances. This ensures a professional standard of presentation when representing Baldivis Secondary College within the school and out in the wider community.
