Course Selection Process

Our Senior School program operates for all students in Years 10, 11 and 12. Our rationale for this structure is to support students to make a smooth transition into Years 11 and 12 in terms of academic rigor, social experience, and student expectations.

The options available for students in Years 11 and 12 are many and varied and the need to involve parents, teachers and trained course advisors in the decision making process is very important.

Course Selection Process for Year 11 Students

Studying at the senior level means that students are expected to take greater responsibility for their academic decisions. Additionally, students are expected to develop independence in their study habits and skills. Students are supported through the study habits and skills they have learnt since Year 7.

The selection process used to help students select appropriate courses will consist of a number of stages:

  1. Students continue from Year 10 in exploring career paths in TUTORIAL classes during Terms 1 and 2;
  2. Students prepare an Individual Pathway Plan, and research a minimum of two “end-game” plans i.e. Plan A and Plan B;
  3. Students are required to apply for their Unique Student Identifier (USI) by end of Week 5, Term 2, and provide a hard-copy to their TUTORIAL teacher;
  4. The Senior School Manager, VET Manager, Curriculum Team Leaders and TUTORIAL teachers will address students about course selection and specific courses;
  5. Parents will be invited to a Parent Information Evening in Term 2;
  6. Parents can ask further questions by contacting the Senior School Manager or the VET Manager via the Senior School Pathway Centre;
  7. Parents will be contacted to book an interview time for them and their child in in Term 2 with their TUTORIAL to discuss and make course selections;
  8. In some cases, course selection will need to be reviewed based on results in second semester.

Choosing the Right Course

As young people mature and collect more information, it’s likely that they will change their understanding about their choices. The courses students select should be able to deliver the broadest range of choices for further education and training and for meeting employer expectations.
