Year 12 Geography (ATAR)

The study of geography involves investigating a range of challenges and opportunities facing Australia and the global community. These challenges include:

  • Rapid change in biophysical environments
  • Dealing with environmental risks
  • The sustainability of places
  • The consequences of international integration.

Geography draws on students’ curiosity about the diversity of the world’s places and their peoples, cultures and environments.

A strong emphasis is placed on the use of geographical inquiry methods and skills. The understandings, skills, knowledge and values developed in the course will ensure students are well placed for tertiary study and/or employment.

Prerequisites:

Minimum is C grade in Year 11 ATAR Geography.

Syllabus:

The Year 12 syllabus is divided into two units, each of one semester duration, which are typically delivered as a pair. The notional time for each unit is 55 class contact hours.

Unit 3 – Global environmental change

In this unit, students assess the impacts of land cover transformations with particular reference to climate change or biodiversity loss. Aspects of physical, environmental and human geography provide students with an integrated and comprehensive understanding of the processes related to land cover change, their local, regional and global environmental consequences, and possible sustainable solutions.

Unit 4 – Planning sustainable places

In this unit, students investigate how the outcomes of processes vary depending on local responses and adaptations, for example, population growth and decline, and economic restructuring. Students also examine the causes and consequences of urbanisation as well as challenges that exist in metropolitan and regional centres and megacities. Students will embark on a field trip to Perth City to investigate in depth the urban planning that has occurred and is occurring to accommodate an increase in population, whilst following sustainable urban planning practices.
