Why P&C Membership Matters

Being part of the Baldivis Secondary College P&C is simply about being involved in your child’s school community in whatever way works for you. Whether you join to stay informed, meet other families, or contribute to the College in a small or big way, the P&C offers a welcoming space where every contribution matters.

All parents and community members are invited to be involved.

Joining the P&C has so many benefits—and like most things, you get out what you put in. For many of us, it’s a simple way to stay connected to what’s happening at school, support our children’s learning, and meet other parents who care about the College community.

Your involvement can be as big or small as you’re comfortable with. Every bit of engagement—attending a meeting, helping at an event, sharing an idea—plays a part in strengthening our school. And just as you support the College, you’ll find the College community supports you in return. You’ll learn new skills, understand more about how the school operates, and have a genuine voice in shaping its future.

For me personally, I joined because my own parents were always involved in my school years. It felt natural to follow their example, and I hope my children see the value in giving back too. Research backs this up: when parents show they value school, children tend to do better—academically, socially and emotionally. Supporting our kids can be as simple as asking about their day, meeting their teachers, attending College events, or being part of the P&C.

I also really enjoy knowing that the time I put in helps fund those extra resources and opportunities that the College budget doesn’t always cover. I like organising things, being useful, and feeling part of something that contributes to the broader community. It’s my own version of the ACT, Belong, Commit message—connecting with people, pitching in, and being part of something positive. Everyone participates in their own way: some parents work full time, some work from home, and contributions look different for everyone. Your skills, interests and hobbies are always welcome.

Another big benefit for me has been staying in the loop. I work part time and usually just drop off and pick up, which means I don’t often see other parents. Being part of the P&C helps me stay informed and gives me chances to meet other families and staff.

Of course, every experience is different. Some parents hesitate to join because meetings follow certain processes and rules. But these guidelines are there for good reasons—to ensure transparency, fairness and to keep decisions aligned with the needs and values of the whole school community. They protect the P&C from being dominated by a single voice or personal agenda.

At the end of the day, everyone involved shares the same goal: doing something positive for the College and our kids. That’s what brings us together.

Thinking About Getting Involved?

If you’re even a little curious, why not give it a go?

  • Bring a friend to the first meeting if that feels more comfortable.

  • Contact any of our committee members—we’re always happy to chat and help you feel welcome.

  • Join a committee (such as fundraising or canteen) if that interests you more than meetings.

  • Sign up to our volunteer list to be contacted when events or projects need support—you can help when it suits you.

Every contribution—no matter how small—is valued, appreciated, and genuinely makes a difference. Everyone’s contribution is valued, you can say “no” when you need to, you get to meet new people, and most importantly have some fun along the way!
